Follow the footsteps of the monks of Ramundeboda

Munkastigen is part of a trail, which the monks of the Ramundeboda kloster walked towards Olshammar. There at the lake Vättern they set sail to the monasteries in Vadstena and Alvastra. With the help of old maps this trail has been reconstructed.

The trail is 40 km long and moderately difficult. It is divided into northern and southern Munkastigen, 23 and 17 km. Markes with orange rings on trees and poles and signs with a symbol of a walking munk.

North of Ramundeboda it continues with three day-walks of the pilgrims trail, Pilgrimsleden, over Skagershultsmossen, to Tangeråsa and Riseberga monastery ruin.

A part of this munkatrail is used by the Bergslags Trail, which has 17 day walks in total.  The Bergslagsleden is drawn in alternating Bergslagens and Tivedens nature and passing several beautiful lakes.

Along the trail are also attractions of both geological and cultural-historical nature, such as: Ramundeboda ruin and abbey, a big altar stone where the monks formerly said to have preached, nature reserves Kråksjöåsen and Getaryggen, Verner von Heidenstams home and Birgittas church in Olshammar.
