Monastery ruins at Ramundeboda

At Ramundeboda, you can see the ruins of an Antonite monastery. The hostelry was an important stop for travellers in the age when it took days to pass through the woods of Tiveden.

There is a certain attraction to big cities - no doubt about it - but then there is something really special about small towns. All of a sudden, the pace slows and there is time to look at lovely houses, study unusual window designs, soak up scents and sit drinking coffee for hours!
...in Laxå

Situated next to the E20, Laxå was previously a factory town that grew up around the iron forges. Today, it is a modern industrial community that is developing rapidly.

... and in Askersund

In the marketplace in Askersund, you will find a charming atmosphere radiating from the small shops, cobbled streets and the scent of freshly baked bread. Askersund is famous for its numerous cafés.

The history of the region is well preserved in the churches.
Originally, the wooden Ramundeboda church was part of the monastery here, but it has been in the centre of Laxå since 1899. Down by Unden lake stands the church town of Sannerud with its rural store and streets lined with old-fashioned buildings. You should also take the time to see Finnerödja Church, built of local sandstone, and the old church in Skagershult. Both churches date back to the 1600s.

Just outside Laxå is Porla Brunn, a health spa dating back to the 1700s. Many of the original buildings are still standing and in the octagonal pavilion, you can still drink well water. Porla water is bottled in the water factory since 1923. The Emilia Chapel is located in the heart of the traditional spa environment and is topped with a lantern for the spa bell.

In Garvaregården, coffee is served wintertime by the fireplace - or ideally in the bustling courtyard. Café Tutingen has a rich history, which the staff are only too happy to relate, while the cosy little Lilla Caféet is situated in the Mayor´s Residence. On the town hall roof, the smith rings the hours on an iron bell - a symbol of the region´s famous forge. In fact, in the 1600s, Askersund was the centre for the region´s forge and scythe manufacturing industry.

The harbour in Askersund is constantly bustling with boats and people. Sailors on the waters of Vättern often call in here after visiting the national park, and the harbour is also a gathering point for families heading for Barnens ö (Children´s island).
